“As I have consistently said, President Obama overstepped his constitutional authority when he issued his Executive Action on immigration. His action was overly broad and went against the expressed will of Congress and I believe the judge was right in granting a temporary stay. The President does not rule by fiat.
Although I have not supported the tactic of defunding the President's executive action on immigration in the Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill because I believe it may lead to a damaging shutdown of the agency that is in charge of keeping Americans safe at home, I do believe it is the prerogative of the Congress to set the nation’s immigration laws.
It is undeniable that our immigration system is broken and Congress should responsibly address immigration reform with a step-by-step approach – starting with a strong border security bill – just as the majority of the American People want to see done.”
