U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent (PA-15) made the following statement after voting to adopt a resolution that self-imposes an across-the-board moratorium on congressionally directed funding – popularly known as earmarks - for all Republicans serving in the U.S. House of Representatives:

“The earmark process has drawn the attention and criticism of the American people as a symbol of what is wrong with Washington and Congress. Members of Congress owe their constituents transparent, accountable and responsible governance. Because of abuses by a few, the practice of earmarking has not inspired confidence that Congress is living up to that charge.

“In an era of ballooning deficits, leaders must take action to control escalating spending. The adoption today by the House Republicans of an immediate moratorium on earmarks sends a strong message that Congress is serious about fiscal restraint and getting our budget in order.

“I urge Speaker Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Reid to act swiftly in following the Republican Conference’s example by imposing a complete moratorium for all members of the House and Senate, and working in a bipartisan fashion to enact meaningful earmark reforms that ensure that every dollar is spent efficiently, funding is allocated fairly and the process is completely transparent to the American people.”
