(Washington, DC) – Veterans Affairs Secretary Bob McDonald recently gave an interview which downplayed the wait times veterans face as they try to see physicians and receive services through the VA. The Secretary compared the situation to waiting in lines at Disney’s amusement parks. Representative Charlie Dent (PA-15), Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee for Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, released the following statement regarding the Secretary’s comments:

“The House just passed H.R. 4974, the Fiscal Year 2017 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations Act by an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote. This bill contains funding for greater choice, increases the accessibility of medical records, and hires more physicians. These provisions, and several others, will increase efficiency and reduce wait times for veterans.

Anybody can make a mistake when talking to the public. A speaker can choose a bad example to illustrate a point or phrase a statement poorly. I fervently hope that this is what happened in the case of Secretary McDonald’s inappropriate comparison.

The American people and Congress have spoken on this issue – they want timely, quality health care available for our veterans, and we no longer have any patience for bureaucratic indifference or platitudes."
