WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent (PA-15) issued the following statement on his support for H. Res. 268, a resolution reaffirming the United States’ commitment to a negotiated settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through direct negotiations:

“As a cosponsor of this resolution, I believe the only way to reach a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is through direct negotiations between the two parties.

“The United States must stand with Israel to deter any efforts made by the Palestinian government to circumvent direct negotiations by exploiting the United Nations or any related third parties. I support finding a solution to this conflict, but feel the only way to achieve a real and lasting peace is through direct, bilateral negotiations. As such, the Obama Administration must oppose a unilateral declaration of Palestinian statehood and veto any resolutions brought before the United Nations Security Council that provide statehood prematurely and arbitrarily.

“Further, the Palestinian Authority must recognize Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state and call on Hamas to end its encouragement of and support for violent attacks against the Israeli people. There can be no peace agreement reached in an environment where Israelis or Palestinians feel their basic security is threatened by terrorist actions.”
