“I am extremely pleased Congress and the White House have reached an agreement on federal spending that prevents an extraordinarily disruptive government shutdown. As I have stated in the past, the American people rightfully demand Members of Congress work together in a constructive manner to overcome differences and achieve essential goals, such as funding government operations. I believe we have accomplished this goal with the finalization of tonight’s agreement.
“The completion of H.R. 1363, a temporary spending measure that averts a government shutdown, provides the necessary time to finalize and pass an agreement that funds the government through the remainder of Fiscal Year 2011 in coming days. I am especially pleased we have ensured members of our Armed Forces continue to receive the pay they’ve earned for defending our nation.
“Permitting even a brief government shutdown would have represented a complete failure of our most basic responsibilities as elected officials. I hope this agreement will serve as a foundation for subsequent efforts to control federal spending and promote fiscal discipline in Washington.”
