Congressman Charlie Dent (PA-15) issued the following statement regarding the decision by former Senator George Mitchell, Penn State's athletics integrity monitor, to recommend the return of all scholarships for Penn State next year.
“This is excellent news for the student athletes at Penn State University. I have long said that in seeking to punish the guilty the NCAA had hurt the innocent, in this case prospective students who were denied the opportunity to attend a premier university over the criminal actions of someone else.
The capriciousness of the NCAA’s actions – when it comes to impacting the lives of the student athletes it purports to serve is one of the reasons I introduced legislation designed to protect student athletes and to bring accountability to the NCAA.”
Congressman Dent introduced the National Collegiate Athletics Accountability Act, H.R. 2903, with Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-3) in August of 2013.
