BETHLEHEM, PA – U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent (PA-15) yesterday hosted a send-off event for 19 students from the 15th District who will attend one of the country’s 5 service academies this fall. The students were joined by numerous family members and friends at the event, which took place in the Congressman’s District Office in Bethlehem.

Seventeen of the students, including recent graduates from 10 area high schools and a home-schooled student, were formally nominated for admission at one of the academies by the Congressman in December (the Naval Preparatory School does not require a Congressional nomination). Students completed an extensive nomination process that includes interviews with the Congressman’s Military Academy Nomination Board, comprised of local residents with ties to the military and veteran communities.

“I am proud to have nominated these students for admission to one of our fine service academies. These bright, hard-working young people have chosen to serve our nation while continuing their education. I commend them for their willingness to serve and wish them the best of luck in their studies,” Dent explained.

Nineteen represents the largest number of local students enrolling at an academy in a single year during the Congressman’s three terms as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

“The number of students from our area attending academies in the fall illustrates the strength of families and commitment of educators in our community,” Dent continued.
