(Washington, D.C.) Representative Charlie Dent (PA-15) released the following statement regarding the resignation of Speaker John Boehner.
“This is a tremendous loss for our party, the U.S. House of Representatives and for the entire country. John Boehner is a good and decent man, and has been a dedicated public servant. He has led the U.S. House with strong principles while also understanding the responsibility we have to lead and govern affirmatively. I have been proud to serve alongside him and under his leadership, the U.S. House has accomplished many important goals: reduced the deficit, constrained federal spending, made key entitlement reforms, repealed the flawed physician payment method under Medicare, and held the Administration accountable. Most importantly, John Boehner has provided institutional stability in running and managing the people’s House with integrity.
Unfortunately, there were too many along the way who attempted to undermine him at every turn—not only weakening the Speaker's ability to lead but also the Republican Conference and the Congress itself—instead of working to advance commonsense conservative legislation on issues ranging from developing the nation’s infrastructure, reforming the tax code, and growing the economy. The next Speaker of the U.S. House and Republican leadership team must demonstrate a willingness and ability to forge bipartisan solutions to the many outstanding challenges the American public expect us to confront and address.”
