(Allentown, PA) – Representative Charlie Dent (PA-15), the incoming Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, made his first official visits as the new Chairman today. Dent attended briefings and tours at two VA facilities that serve his constituents in the 15th District: the VA Outpatient Clinic in Allentown and the VA Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre.
“Making sure that we meet the health care needs of our veterans is a tremendous responsibility,” said Dent. “It’s one I fully intend to deliver on. They have faced down threats, borne hardships and bear scars received while defending their fellow citizens,” Dent added.
Dent met with medical and administrative staff at both VA facilities.
“I came away from these meeting greatly impressed,” the Representative stated. “I’m pleased to say that in a recent audit both the Wilkes-Barre Medical Center and the Allentown Clinic performed well. I was especially glad that Dr. Michael D. Adelman, the Medical Director for Wilkes-Barre, and Dr. Jay Kloin, the Chief Medical Officer at Allentown’s Clinic, have plans in place to make sure both facilities will continue to perform well.”
The Allentown Clinic services approximately 10,000 veterans and Wilkes-Barre serves approximately 38,000.
Representative Dent voted for the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act of 2014. This law works to ensure that ailing veterans will no longer linger on waiting lists while in desperate need of care.
“Congress reacted swiftly and decisively to the facts that emerged from the horrendous failure of the Phoenix VA Health Care system. Now, we want to make sure that the law is working as intended, both to protect our veterans and to make sure that the taxpayer money we invested in fixing the system is doing just that,” Dent concluded.
The Military Construction and Veterans Affair appropriations bill dictates the spending of approximately $170 billion per budget cycle. Of that amount approximately fifty-five percent represents mandatory spending.
Representative Tom Marino (PA-10) joined Representative Dent along with staff from Representative Lou Barletta’s (PA-11) and Representative Matt Cartwright’s (PA-17) offices during the tour and briefing at the Wilkes-Barre Medical Center.
Representative Dent chairs the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and the House Ethics Committee.
