Nonprofit organizations provide invaluable services to their communities, which is why they enjoy tax-exempt status from the Federal Government. However, such organizations which fail to satisfy annual filing requirements three years in a row risk losing their favored tax status. Reportedly more than 700 nonprofits in our area are on the IRS' list of organizations "at risk" of losing their tax-exempt status.

Fortunately, the IRS is providing one-time relief for nonprofits that have filing due dates between May 17 and October 15, 2010. Organizations whose filings were not submitted or have not yet been received for 2007, 2008, or 2009 are eligible.
